Fourth-Ranked Bulldogs Run-Rule Grambling
March 31, 2026 | Baseball
STARKVILLE - No. 4 Mississippi State kept its dominant run at home rolling Tuesday night, overwhelming Grambling State 12-0 to extend its winning streak at Dudy Noble Field to 20 games dating back to last season.
The victory tied for the fourth-longest home winning streak in program history as the Diamond Dawgs (25-4) controlled the game from the opening inning and never let up until the game was called in the seventh due to the 10-run mercy rule.
State wasted no time setting the tone. After loading the bases in the first, the Bulldogs capitalized on a balk before Ryder Woodson delivered a two-run double to left, giving MSU a quick 3-0 cushion. That early burst proved more than enough for a pitching staff that combined for a two-hit shutout.
The Diamond Dawgs continued to apply pressure in the second inning, scoring twice despite not recording a hit. A throwing error by Grambling State allowed Kevin Milewski to score, and Ace Reese added an RBI groundout to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Mississippi State's lineup stayed aggressive in the third when Gehrig Frei ripped an RBI double down the right-field line, plating Woodson to make it 6-0. An inning later, the Bulldogs effectively put the game out of reach with a three-run fourth. Jacob Parker drew a bases-loaded walk, and Frei added two more RBIs with a single to cap the frame and push the lead to 9-0.
The offensive depth of MSU was on full display in the fifth. Andrew Raymond launched a solo home run to center field, and a bases-loaded walk by Peter Mershon added another run as State extended the advantage to 11-0. The Bulldogs tacked on one more in the sixth on an RBI single from James Nunnallee.
Woodson led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Frei finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Nunnallee added a pair of hits and an RBI and Raymond's pinch-hit homer highlighted a productive night off the bench.
On the mound, the Diamond Dawgs were just as dominant. Mississippi State used six pitchers to combine for the shutout, allowing only two hits while striking out 10. Jack Bauer (2-0) earned the win in relief, striking out three over 1 1/3 innings. Starter Chris Billingsley set the tone with two hitless innings and the bullpen followed with efficiency to secure the clean sheet.
Grambling State fell to 9-18 with the loss. Â
MSU is back in action Thursday against another breed of Bulldogs. Fifth-ranked Georgia comes to Starkville for a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. on SEC Network+.
