Second Straight Seven-Homer Day Gives State Saturday Sweep
March 01, 2025 | Softball
STARKVILLE – For the second straight day, home runs were the story at the Bulldog Invitational presented by C Spire. No. 21 Mississippi State scored every run in a 3-2 victory against Northwestern State via the long ball before hitting a season-high five in a 10-4 win over New Mexico.
Â
Kylee Edwards has now homered in every game of the Bulldog Invitational. Meanwhile, Nadia Barbary and Kiarra Sells went back-to-back on the second day in a row. Barbary left the yard twice for her first career multi-homer game. Morgan Bernardini drove in a pair of runs against the Lobos (8-11-1). Paige Ernstes and Lexi Sosa also hit homers on Saturday.
Â
"I don't think we played our best softball today, but good teams find ways to win," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "We did a good job of responding after a close game in Game 1 and coming out and attacking a little bit better to start out Game 2. It was good to see the offensive adjustments up and down the lineup. Nadia [Barbary] had another great day, so did Kylee [Edwards]. The little things are something we pride ourselves on. At-bats like hitting behind the runner like Lexi Sosa did to set up Kylee, and then Morgan Bernadini hits a ground ball to score a run. There are a lot of ways to score a run for us besides just the home run. We did much better in Game 2."
Â
Freshman Sara Phillips got the start in Game 1, going 6.1 innings while allowing just two hits to earn her first career victory. Sosa picked up the save in that game. Delainey Everett earned her fourth win of the year in the day's second game, tossing 4.0 scoreless frames. Chaffin threw the final 2.0 frames, striking out five.
Â
Â
"I thought Sara did a great job. She really kept us in it in a close ballgame and was mixing pitches and doing a great job keeping them off balance. She got a lot of ground balls and just did her job. It was good to see her out there in that situation to start out the game. That's something we know for the future can be a big part of what we're doing. Right now, we're just trying to ease her in as we get throughout the season a little bit more."
Â
Samantha Ricketts on what she hopes to see against Northwestern State tomorrow...
"I want us to finish the weekend strong and with a little bit more energy and intensity to start the day. I don't think we quite did that against them today. Our expectations are higher, and we want to play Mississippi State Softball all the time, not coming out and waiting a couple innings until we really get going. I expect us to come out, compete, attack and have high energy from the first pitch tomorrow."
Â
Nadia Barbary on the team's offensive production at the Bulldog Invitational...
"We are just being aggressive and trusting our plan that we make before the game. Batting practice shows it, and we are just going through the plan. When we do get to the plate, it's right where we expect it to be. I'm kind of seeing beach balls right now, thankfully, but I'm just trusting the plan. We've been practicing it all week, and it's showing out there on the field."
