Bulldogs Fall In Final Game Of Home Tournament Play
March 02, 2025 | Softball
STARKVILLE – No. 21 Mississippi State was shut out on Sunday in a 5-0 loss to Northwestern State to close the Bulldog Invitational presented by C Spire.
MSU (18-3) made 17 of its 21 outs in the air. At one point, the Bulldogs made every out in the air for three consecutive innings.
"We have to do a much better job at making adjustments," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "There's no way we can continue to put the ball in the air on a pitcher that is trying to do that. I think regardless of the wind blowing in or not, it's 100 percent on us to make the adjustment and hit the ball on the ground. Make them make throws and two plays to get us out. I think we just did not make enough adjustments, really at all, up and down the lineup."
Sierra Sacco doubled twice, extending her reached-base streak to 19 games. Riley Hull also collected a base hit. Raelin Chaffin threw the final inning, striking out two. Kylee Edwards recorded eight total chances error-free, including a season-high five assists.
"I think getting back to playing the way where we are aggressive, attacking and not uptight. I think making adjustments sooner is going to be a big part of it. Not getting beat up and down the lineup on the same location of the same pitch. We've got to be ready for both teams. Louisiana is a great team, and Auburn is coming in also. There's going to be some battles, and we are going to have to find a little bit of fire from this and come out with a new sense of focus."
Raelin Chaffin – Entered in relief and recorded two strikeouts in 1.0 inning.
Sierra Sacco – Extended her reached-base streak to 19 … doubled twice … now leads the team with eight doubles.
Kiarra Sells – Was hit by a pitch for the team-leading seventh time this year … has now been hit 11 times in her career.
Carissa Hernandez led the inning off with a single off the third baseman. With one out, Cameron Curtis a potential double play ball to third. Hernandez was retired, but the throw across bounced into the dugout moving Curtis to second on the error. Two wild pitches allowed Curtis to reach third and score.
