STARKVILLE – Mississippi State got back in the win column on Thursday, as the Bulldogs took care of the Arkansas Razorbacks, 78-55. Five Bulldogs finished in double digits on the night.
"First and foremost, it feels great to be back in the win column," head coach Sam Purcell said. "There's a pride factor in it, and I've said several times how I love this team. They have a spirit about them. They haven't folded and they want to get better. We saw glimpses of correction to previous game failures, and that is the biggest thing at this time of year."
Â
The Bulldogs got out to a hot start against the Razorbacks, as they opened the game on an 8-0 run. They finished the first with 28 points, which is the most State has scored in the first quarter during conference play. State would never look back in the contest, as they extended their lead to 49-30 at the half.
Â
"Starting the game swinging has been a huge emphasis this week in practice for us," Jerkaila Jordan said. "We worked on starting off hot and want to use this momentum we got from this game and take it one game at a time going into March."
Â
Debreasha Powe was on fire against the Razorbacks, as she finished with a team-leading 16 points, tying her season-best mark. In the first half, she knocked down all five three-pointers she took, which was also the most she had hit in a single game this season.
Â
"I just have to give credit to my teammates," Powe said. "They believed in me, they were finding me and told me to just knock it down. I was ready this game."
Â
"Debreasha is like the mother of the team, she has been like that since her freshman year," Jordan said. "She is our voice when we're down, and Debreasha will always be the one to pick us up. You never see her with a bad attitude or a frown on her face. She is always smiling and is someone that you enjoy being around.
Â
Jordan and Chandler Prater both had great nights for the Bulldogs as well. Jordan tied Powe with 16 points, five steals and collected with her 4th double-double of the season after collecting 10 rebounds. Chandler Prater tied her season-high of 14 points on a season-best six made shots, including 2-4 shooting beyond the arc. It was the fifth time Prater scored in double-figures this season.
Â
Madina Okot and Destiney McPhaul rounded out the Bulldog scoring. Okot collected 12 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season, including two steals, which both resulted in layups after she got out on the break. McPhaul tallied 11 points against the Razorbacks, the tenth time she has finished a game in double-figures this season.
Â
Next up for Mississippi State will be a top 25 opponent in the form of No. 22 Alabama on Sunday.
Â
"Alabama is a great team, they have a lot of returned experience," Purcell said. "If we have to play them, I'm thankful we get to play them at home. I'm urging our fans to come out on a Super Bowl Sunday to have a Super Bowl party early before the big one later that night."
Â
The Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide will face off on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on the SEC Network.
