No. 18 MSU Drops Tight Decision To No. 21 Troy

STARKVILLE – No. 18 Mississippi State dropped a tight 6-5 decision to 21^st-ranked Troy on Tuesday night.

The Trojans hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth to take the lead. The Diamond Dawgs were able to advance a runner into scoring position in the bottom half but were unable to answer and fell to 6-2 on the year.

Gehrig Frei led MSU's 13-hit attack at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and scored a pair of runs. Noah Sullivan added a 2-for-3 performance that included a grand slam in the fifth frame.

Ace Reese went 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Reed Stallman was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and Bryce Chance was also 2-for-5 with two singles.

Bulldog pitching logged a season-high 20 strikeouts against Troy (7-1).

Jacob Pruitt made his first start on the mound this season logging four innings with nine strikeouts, no walks and allowed only one run. Ben Davis (0-1) took the loss in relief.

Mississippi State will be in Houston at Daikin Park for the Astros Foundation College Classic. First pitch for Friday against Rice is set for 11:05 a.m., Saturday the Bulldogs will play Arizona at 3:05 p.m. and Sunday they take on Oklahoma State with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. All games will be broadcast on ASTROS.COM.

Game Notes:

JT Schnoor made his first mound appearance with the Bulldogs.

Sullivan hit his first home run of the season.

Sullivan passed Aaron Downs for most RBIs on the team with 11.

Mississippi State struck out a season-high 20 batters. The last time the Bulldogs struck out over 20 was against Texas on June 20, 2021 during the College World Series, punching out 21 batters.
