September 21, 2024 | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Ugo Malcor led the way for Mississippi State on Saturday in the first round of the Valero Texas Collegiate. The junior carded a 4-under 68 and sits in a tie for seventh.
All but one Bulldog in the team lineup shot below par on the first day of action from TPC San Antonio. Individual Harrison Davis also came in under par. As a team, State shot 7-under, totaling 281and landing in sixth. The Bulldogs are two strokes back of No. 3 Virginia and No. 4 Vanderbilt. No. 8 Oklahoma leads the field at 20-under thanks in large part to individual leader Jase Summy who shot 10-under his first time through the course.
"I thought we executed our gameplan very well out there today," State head coach Dusty Smith said. "We stayed disciplined and very patient out there. I was proud of the way we competed and how we had five guys in the round the whole way. We have a lot of golf left and need to make sure we play within ourselves and continue to execute how we know how to."
Malcor got out to a hot start, birdying four of his first nine holes. After a bogey on No. 14, he finished with a birdie on the par-5 final hole to finish positively. No. 18 was friendly to multiple Bulldogs as Josep Serra and Garrett Endicott both finished with a birdie on the final tee as well.
Serra played steady golf through the front nine, shooting par on every hole. He stumbled slightly out of the turn with a bogey on No. 10, but he rallied for three birdies over the final eight holes to finish at 2-under. Serra is tied for 23rd after one round.
Dain Richie had an up-and-down day. He was tied with Malcor for the team lead with five birdies in the round; however, two bogies and a double bogey left him at just 1-under when the round was said and done. Drew Wilson, making his season debut, birdied his first hole of the year and finished at even par.
A double bogey on No. 3 was all that kept Endicott from staying under par. The San Antonio native finished at 1-over and is tied for 50th. All six Bulldogs competing this week are among the top 50 in a field of 90 players after 18 holes of play.
Mississippi State will play alongside Vanderbilt and Virginia on Sunday and will tee off at 8:50 a.m. CT. Endicott will lead things off for the Bulldogs from the No. 1 tee. Davis is set to leave the clubhouse at 10 a.m. from the No. 10 tee. Live results will be available on GolfStat.com.
