August 29, 2024 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State volleyball team travels to Birmingham, Alabama this weekend to open the team's 50th season. The Bulldogs are set to face Samford on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center and UAB on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Bartow Arena. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
It has been over two decades since the last time Samford and Mississippi State have matched up with each other. Over 21 games in history, State holds 20 wins over Samford as they look to add another win to the record book.
Mississippi State and UAB are set to compete again this weekend after a three-year hiatus in the series. State owns a three-game win streak against the Blazers heading into Saturday.
Mississippi State's roster includes 7 student-athletes that were on the 2023 roster - Karli Schmidt, Arissa Smith, Erin Kline, Rebecca Walk, Mary Neal, Amina Shackelford and Sanaa Williams.
Alongside the returners, the Bulldogs added six newcomers to the roster this season: Mele Corral-Blagojevich, Arianna Beckham, Kennedy Davis, Ceci Harness, Kailin Newsome and Payton Woods.
Corral-Blagojevich joins the squad from Oklahoma where she posted 173 digs and 24 service aces in her freshman season. Beckham joins the squad from Florida Atlantic, where she tallied double digit kills in 20 of 33 matches in her last season.
Davis began her career at Western Illinois university before transferring to Tennessee State. Last season, she led her team last season in blocks (109), while she picked up 144 kills. Harness joins the team from North Texas where she garnered 681 assists, 241 digs and had double digit assists in all but three matches.
Last year at Southeastern Louisiana, Newsome tallied 519 points, 50 service aces and 453 kills during the season. Woods joins the team after she was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, as she collected 157 kills, 175 points and 21 blocks.
Rounding out the roster are five incoming freshmen: Ava Anderson, Cayley Hanson, Noella Obi, Ava Pierzynski and McKenna Yates.
After Saturday's match, the Bulldogs will head back to Starkville for the Starkvegas Classic next weekend. State will open the classic facing Michigan on Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m.
