Four Diamond Dawgs Taken On Day 2 of MLB Draft

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State saw four players drafted on the second day of the 2024 Major League Draft, held on Monday (July 15). The four players drafted on the second day are the most players drafted in a single-day since the MLB moved to the 20-round draft.

Nate Dohm was the first Diamond Dawg off the board on Day 2 when the New York Mets selected him in the third round at pick 82. Dakota Jordan was MSU's first position player drafted when he went in the fourth round to the San Francisco Giants. Brooks Auger and Colby Holcombe round out the players drafted on Day 2. Auger was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round and Holcombe went in the ninth round to the Toronto Blue Jays.

On Sunday, Jurrangelo Cijntje was the No. 15 overall pick by the Seattle Mariners and Khal Stephen was the No. 59 overall pick in the second round by the Toronto Blue Jays. Â
Dohm was the 13th Mississippi State player to be drafted by the New York Mets and with the last being outfielder Kellum Clark in the 2023. Jordan is the eighth player to be drafted by the San Francisco Giants and the first since right-handed pitcher Will Bednar in 2021. Auger is the sixth State player to be drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and the first since Connor Powers in 2009. Holcombe is the seventh Mississippi State player to be drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays and the first since Stephen on Sunday night.

In the MLB Draft, Mississippi State has heard 195 student-athletes names called at the event for a total of 236 draft picks overall.

Under head coach Chris Lemonis, Mississippi State has seen 33 student-athletes drafted in the MLB Draft, including six going in the first round. Lemonis also has 16 draft picks in the first five rounds during his MSU tenure.Â
Nate Dohm | RHP | Zionsville, Ind.Â
During his junior season, Dohm was the Dawgs' opening-night starter and led the Diamond Dawgs' pitching throughout the non-conference slate. Dohm made eight appearances for the Maroon and White, six of which were starts. He pitched 29.1 innings and tallied 37 punchouts to only four walks.

During the 2024 season, he posted a 1.23 ERA and a 4-0 record while limiting opponents to only 23 hits. In his second start of the season, Dohm tallied ten strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Two starts later, he matched his strikeout total with another ten against Evansville.

In two years in the Maroon and White, he made 25 appearances (eight starts). He pitched 70.1 innings and held a 10-4 overall record. He posted a 2.94 ERA, while striking out 86 batters and only walking 16.

Prior to coming to State, Dohm made 15 appearances with three starts and posted a 4-3 record at Ball State. He pitched 41 innings and had two saves while positing a 5.71 ERA, and striking out 56. He limited opponents to hit .218. Prior to Ball State, Dohm was a three-year letterman at Zionsville High School.

Dakota Jordan | OF | Canton, Miss.
Awards and honors followed Jordan all throughout the 2024 season as he won the Ferriss Trophy for being the best collegiate player in the state of Mississippi, was a second-team All-SEC outfielder, 2024 Golden Spikes Award semifinalist and 2024 Charlottesville All-Regional Team member. He was also named ABCA All-South Region, a NCBWA Second Team All-American and a Baseball America Third Team All-American.

Over the 2024 season at MSU, Jordan excelled for the Diamond Dawgs as he led the team in home runs (20) and RBIs (72). Jordan had the seventh-best batting average in the SEC hitting .354. His 20 home runs are the eighth-most in a singlÂe season at Mississippi State. He led the team with 26 multi-hit games and 21 multi-RBI games. He was the only Dawg to pick up a five-hit game this season. Jordan also led the team with a .671 slugging percentage and 85 hits.

In two seasons, Jordan appeared in 107 games for State and had a career batting average of .336. He blasted 30 homers and drove in 112 runs along with scoring 86 runs. He had 132 hits for his career and 55 extra base hits. Jordan's on-base percentage stands at .435 over his two seasons.

Prior to dawning the Maroon and White, Jordan was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the State of Mississippi. He broke five school records for home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, batting average and on-base percentage during his senior year at Jackson Academy. He ranked as the 17th best outfielder in the nation coming out of high school.

Brooks Auger | RHP | Farmerville, La. Â
Over the 2024 season, Auger appeared in 20 games while making five starts on the mound. His posted career-highs in his start against Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament going eight innings and punching out 13 hitters. Auger was named to the SEC All-Tournament Team for his performance against the Rebels. He finished the season with a record of 1-2 and an ERA of 3.35, the third lowest ERA on the team. He tallied 50 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .215 batting average.

Auger did not appear in a game for the Dawgs in 2023, but he had 16 appearances - all in relief - during the 2022 season. He finished the 2022 season with a 3.05 ERA and held a record of 2-0. He pitched 20.2 innings and had 27 strikeouts. Opponents struggled hitting off Auger as he limited them to a .219 batting average. He made his Bulldog debut on Feb. 20, 2022, against Long Beach State.

For his career as a Diamond Dawg, Auger made 36 appearances, with five starts. He posted a 3.26 ERA over 66.1 innings of work. He tallied 77 strikeouts to only walking 29 hitters over his 36 appearances.

Prior to joining the Diamond Dawgs, he pitched one season at Hinds Community College. He made nine appearances for Hinds CC, with eight being starts. He went 7-1 on the season and posted 40.2 innings of work. He struck out 53 batters and posted an ERA of 2.88. He averaged 11.73 strikeouts per nine innings.

Auger played high school ball at Cedar Creek High School in Louisiana and was selected as a 2020 Rawlings-Perfect Game Senior Preseason Honorable Mention Selection for the Southeast Region.

Colby Holcombe | RHP | Florence, Ala.
During his junior season in the Maroon and White, Holcombe made 12 appearances with one start. He had one win on the season and tallied 28 punchouts. He pitched 21.2 innings over his 12 appearances. He pitched a season-high four innings with a season-best seven strikeouts against New Orleans on March 13 in Biloxi.

In two years at MSU, Holcombe appeared in 30 games, making four starts. He pitched 57.2 innings and tallied 77 strikeouts as he won three games. He pitched 36 innings in his first year as a Dawg with 449 strikeouts. Following the season, Holcombe was a 2023 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll member.

Prior to dawning the Maroon and White, Holcombe was a 2021 NJCAA First Team All-American at Northeast Mississippi Community College. He was named the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference Pitcher of the Year as he went 7-3 on the season with four complete games. He worked 65.2 innings and tallied 115 strikeouts while posting an ERA of 2.60. He holds the NEMCC record for most strikeouts in a single season (115).

Holcombe was a four-year letter winner at Central High School where he was named First Team All-Region in 2021 after posting a 1.20 ERA in 62 innings of work. He was the team MVP all four years of high school.
