Bulldogs Complete Opening Day Of SEC Outdoor Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Mississippi State track and field program closed out the first day of competition at the 2024 SEC Outdoor Championships on Thursday in Gainesville with 10 personal records, three all-time top five performances and three trips to the finals.
Jordan Ware, Tyrese Reid and Mallory Streetman earned spots in their final events that are slated for Saturday.
Ware earned an automatic trip to the 200m finals after placing first in his heat with a time of 20.62. Ware placed sixth overall and is one of only two freshmen to qualify for the final event. He currently ranks third in the nation with a time of 20.18w and ranks 18th in the nation in the 100m. He will compete in the 100m Friday for a chance to earn an appearance in that event's finals Saturday.
Reid placed second in his heat and sixth overall in the 800m with a time of 1:48.07, earning him a trip to the finals for the first time his postseason career. Reid earned All-SEC Second Team honors during the 2024 indoor season after placing second overall in the 800m at the SEC Indoor Championships. He currently ranks third nationally in the event with a personal-record time of 1:45.76.
Streetman will make her first trip to the SEC Championship finals in the 800m after placing ninth overall Thursday with a time of 2:07.00. Streetman improved 10 spots from her previous finish at the 2023 SEC Outdoor Championships.
Tafada Wright placed 11th in the hammer throw with a personal-best distance of 53.30m (1740-10). Her mark ranks fifth on State's all-time top five performance list. She will compete Saturday in the discus, where she ranks fourth on the Bulldogs' performance list with a personal-record distance of 48.45m (158-11).
Rosealee Cooper added her name to State's 200m performance list for the second time after running a personal-best time of 23.47. Cooper ranks fifth among 200m performances at MSU while also holding the school record in the 100m hurdles.
Anje Nel joined the Bulldogs' all-time top five performance list in the 400m hurdles for the first time. Nel placed 15th on Thursday with a personal-best time of 59.09.
Events will continue at 9 a.m. CT Friday with the decathlon followed by the heptathlon at 10:45 a.m. CT. Field events will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT with the women's pole vault followed by running events beginning at 4 p.m. CT. Saturday's events will begin at 2 p.m. CT with the men's discus, while running finals will begin at 5:05 p.m. CT.
