April 23, 2024 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 38 Mississippi State men's golf team is scheduled to open postseason play at the SEC Championship in St. Simons Island, Georgia, on April 19-23.
The five-day event includes both stroke and match play on the par-70, 7,005-yard Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. Teams will begin the event with traditional stroke play on Wednesday-Friday. The top eight teams will then advance to match-play quarterfinals. Both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be held Saturday, followed by the championship match Sunday. SEC Network+ will have digital coverage of the semifinals on Saturday, and the final match will be televised nationally on the SEC Network on Sunday.
Nine SEC teams are in the Clippd Top 25 heading into the event, including top-ranked Auburn, No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Ole Miss and No. 9 Alabama.
"The postseason is what you prepare for all season long," head coach Dusty smith said. "I know the guys are excited and ready to compete. It's us versus the course this week."
State enters the SEC Championship having finished in the top-10 of each tournament its competed in this season, and in the top half of the field in six tournaments this year. MSU will look to continue its recent success at the SEC Championship event, as the Bulldogs have advanced to match play in back-to-back seasons after making their first appearance in 2022.
The Bulldogs' starting lineup will consist of Hunter Logan, Garrett Endicott, Josep Serra, Harrison Davis and Alejandro Fierro. This marks the second time MSU will run out that lineup combination, with their other appearance coming at the Seminole Intercollegiate where State finished tied for sixth.
"We have to stay disciplined in our game plan and give ourselves great opportunities this week," Smith continued. "I have so much belief in this group and I know they have that same belief in themselves. Now it's time to go compete and enjoy the competition."
Logan will golf in the No. 1 spot for the Bulldogs coming off back-to-back top-25 finishes. He started the season by winning the Visit Knoxville Collegiate and has earned two other top-10 finishes. Logan has twice finished inside the top-20 at the SEC Championship and is 1-1 in SEC Championship match play. He leads the Bulldogs averaging 71.24 strokes per round and is 4-4 in match play in his career.
Endicott golfs in the No. 2 spot for State. The sophomore was a Second Team All-SEC selection last year after he finished tied for 19th at the SEC Championship. He has recorded 15 rounds of par or better golf this season, good for third on the team, and he boasts a 2-1 career record in match play.
Serra is coming off a tied for seventh finish at the Mossy Oak Collegiate. He paces the Bulldogs with 18 rounds of par or better golf this season, which already has him among the top 10 single-season totals in program history. He has recorded five top-20 finishes in 2023-24.
Davis has recorded four consecutive par or better rounds. He substituted in the 2022 SEC Championship where he shot a 71 in the final round to save two strokes on the team score and help State advance to match play for the first time by one stroke. Davis has finished inside the top-20 three times this season and shot a career best 6-under 66 earlier this season at the Kapolei Invitational.
Fierro, the freshman, rounds out the lineup for MSU. He is coming off a career best tie for 21st at the Mossy Oak Collegiate. There, he shot a career-best tying 68 in the final round and finished 1-under. He has competed in six total tournaments for MSU this season, but this will be his second appearance counting the team score.
