COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A huge Mississippi State comeback attempt came up just short Wednesday night, and the Bulldogs fell 75-69 to Texas A&M at Reed Arena.
MSU trailed by 23 points with just over 15 minutes to play before rallying to get within three in the game's final moments. However, the Aggies held on to claim the victory.
Josh Hubbard was instrumental in State's late charge. The sensational Bulldog freshman scored 10 of his team-high 24 points in the second half to give the Bulldogs a chance. Hubbard has now scored 20 or more points in four straight games and is averaging 28.3 points per contest over that span.
Dashawn Davis matched his season best with 15 points and added four steals. Cameron Matthews scored 12 points and Tolu Smith III finished with eight.
Mississippi State found itself playing uphill for much of the night. The Bulldogs fell victim to a sharpshooting Aggie squad that almost couldn't miss from three-point range in the first half.
Texas A&M shot 70 percent from deep over the game's first 20 minutes, making seven of 10 attempts. The Aggies' treys helped them build a controlling 45-32 advantage by halftime.
It looked as though A&M might run away with things over the first few minutes of the second half. The Aggies extended their lead to 57-34 quickly after the intermission, but that's when MSU surged.
State put together a 15-0 run to narrow its deficit to just eight points with a little over 10 minutes to play. The Dawgs kept chipping away and with 1:35 left, a Matthews dunk had MSU down only 72-69. Yet that proved to be the Bulldogs' last gasp and State got no closer.
MSU now will attempt to bounce back in its regular-season finale. The Bulldogs host South Carolina on Saturday, March 9, at Humphrey Coliseum. The game is set for a 1:30 p.m. tip and will be televised by SEC Network.
