Dawgs drop 93-89 decision.
STARKVILLE – Josh Hubbard set a new Mississippi State record for 3-pointers in a single season and Cameron Matthews and Tolu Smith III both recorded double-doubles, but it wasn't enough for MSU as the Dawgs ultimately fell 93-89 in overtime to No. 17 South Carolina at Humphrey Coliseum.
State's Dashawn Davis sank a pair of free throws with one second remaining in regulation to knot things up and stretch the ballgame to an extra period before the Gamecocks outscored the Dawgs 16-12 over the contest's final five minutes.
Hubbard was once again an offensive standout for MSU. The fantastic freshman guard led the way for his team with 28 points. His game-tying trey with a little over three minutes left in the second half was his 98th 3-pointer of the year, passing the previous school single-season best set by MSU legend Darryl Wilson during the 1994-95 campaign.
Hubbard has now scored 20 or more points in five straight games and averaged 28.2 points per contest over that span.
Matthews totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday, to go along with four assists, two blocks and a steal. The performance netted the senior forward his fifth double-double of the season.
Smith scored 14 to go along with 10 boards. The veteran center added to his Southeastern Conference-leading career double-double total among active players with his 33rd.
Davis scored a personal season-high with 16 points for State to join Hubbard, Matthews and Smith in double figures.
South Carolina's B.J. Mack led the way for the Gamecocks. He scored 25 points and shot 8-of-11 from the field. Mack scored seven of his points in overtime to help South Carolina seal its victory.
Next up for MSU, the Bulldogs will begin play in the SEC Tournament. State will face LSU in a noon CT matchup on Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee, at Bridgestone Arena. The game will be televised by SEC Network.
