Bulldogs Prepare For Schenkel Invitational In Georgia
March 14, 2024 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 25 Mississippi State men's golf team is set to compete in its second tournament of the week at the 44th Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern. Â
The tournament will be played on the 7,123-yard, par-72 Forest Heights Country Club Golf Course in Statesboro, Georgia. MSU and the rest of the field will play 54 holes over three days over the weekend.Â
Mississippi State is one of two top-25 teams in the 14-team field that also includes No. 17 Florida, Army, Kentucky, South Carolina and host Georgia Southern.Â
"The Schenkel [Invitational] holds a special place in college golf. It is one of the most historic events we compete in," head coach Dusty Smith said. "The community of Statesboro does a fantastic job of supporting this week's event. We are looking forward to this opportunity."Â
The Bulldogs are set to tee off at 8 a.m. CT on Friday to start the first round. State will send out the same six men who competed at the Seminole Intercollegiate earlier this week. The Bulldogs will be represented by Hunter Logan, Garrett Endicott, Josep Serra, Drew Wilson and Harrison Davis. The five players included in team scoring will also be joined by Alejandro Fierro, competing individually for the fourth time this season. Â
"Our team is focused on our process and what we need to do in order to be successful," Smith continued. "I really challenged the guys to enjoy the competition, have fun and compete like we know how to do. All that matters to us is playing up to our standard every time we tee it up. Just go play Mississippi State golf."Â
This year marks the 13th time Mississippi State has participated in the Schenkel Invitational and the second straight year the Bulldogs have appeared at the event. Last year, both Mississippi State, as a team, and Hunter Logan, as an individual, earned second place finishes at the event. In last year's opening round, Logan shot a then-career-low round with a 7-under 65. He later eclipsed that mark at the 2023 Mossy Oak Collegiate.Â
Logan enters the tournament as the nation's No. 50 golfer and has shot par or better in 12 rounds this season, which leads the team. Nine of those rounds have been in the 60s, which also leads the team, and he has finished inside the top-three twice this season. Logan earned an individual crown at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate in the fall. Â
Endicott joins Logan and Serra as one of three Bulldogs to have competed at every event this season. Currently, he has 11 total par or better rounds on the season. He has twice earned top-20 finishes this season and finished 22nd at the Watersound Invitational earlier this year.Â
Serra ranked among the top 20 in the SEC with a 70.57 stroke average last fall and is the nation's No. 109 golfer according to Spikemark. He also is tied for second-highest on the team with 11 rounds of par or better play this season. He led all Bulldogs at the Watersound Invitational, finishing tied for 14th. Earlier in the fall, he earned the first top-three finish of his Division I career, tying for third at the Fallen Oak Collegiate. In total, Serra has finished inside the top 20 on four occasions this season.Â
Harrison Davis will compete for the seventh time this season. He earned his best finish since the 2021-22 season with an 11th place finish at the fall's Blessings Collegiate Invitational. Â
Wilson will return to the team lineup for the Bulldogs after competing individually last time out. Wilson has earned top-10 finishes in two of the three tournaments he's competed in this year, good for second most on the team. In his Bulldog debut, he shot a 7-under 209 and was the highest placing freshman in the field, tying for third at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate. His career-low 65 in the second round is tied for the lowest round by a Bulldog this season. Wilson went on to be named SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week for his performance. Last time out, Wilson led the Bulldogs and finished tied for eighth at Seminole Intercollegiate. The redshirt freshman also earned the first individual ranking of his career, climbing to No. 86 in the latest Spikemark ranking.Â
Fierro will compete for the Bulldogs for the fourth time this season. He carded an even-par 71 in the first round of the SEC Match Play event earlier this season, and he tied for 22nd at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate. Â
