State Finishes Sixth at Seminole Intercollegiate
March 12, 2024 | Men's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 22 Mississippi State men's golf team completed the Seminole Intercollegiate on Tuesday. As a team the Bulldogs shot a combined 12-over 300 in the final round and climbed four places on the day to finish tied for sixth alongside Stetson.Â
"Not the week we were hoping for, but I'm really proud of the fight we gave today, especially on the back nine," head coach Dusty Smith said. "This golf course was a championship test that demanded excellence this week. If you were a little bit off, you paid the price."Â
The finish marks MSU's fifth tournament this year finishing in the top half of the field. State has also finished inside the top-10 in all seven of their team tournaments this season. Â
Individually, the Bulldogs were led by Drew Wilson who shot a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish 1-under overall. Wilson's 1-under score was good enough to earn him a tie for eighth place, marking his second top-10 finish in three tournaments this season. The redshirt freshman now holds sole possession of the second-most top-10 finishes on the team this season, trailing only Hunter Logan. Wilson was one of just 12 golfers in the tournament to finish under par overall. Â
"This group is not pleased with the week, but at the same time, we know the areas we need to get better at in order to be a championship team," Smith continued. "There's lots of golf to be played this season. I know our guys are chomping at the bit to get back out and compete again this week."Â
The Bulldogs' lowest round on the day was carded by Harrison Davis, who had his best round of the tournament. Davis collected four birdies and finished 1-over, climbing 25 spots to tie for 41st. Davis' jump on the leaderboard was the second highest in the field behind Indiana's Noah Gillard.Â
Garrett Endicott and Hunter Logan finished tied with one another on the individual leaderboard for the second consecutive tournament. The two combined for four birdies in the round and finished in a four-way tie for 28th place.Â
Alejandro Fierro carded the second most birdies of any Bulldog on the day, recording three, all on the front nine, and finishing tied for 58th. Josep Serra recorded an even back nine and finished tied with Davis in 41st place overall.Â
The Bulldogs will now have their quickest turnaround yet. MSU is set to tee off the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia, on Friday. State will compete in three rounds, culminating in the final round on Sunday, March 17.Â
