February 06, 2024 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn., For the second time in five days, Mississippi State men's tennis will be crossing the Magnolia State's northern border into Tennessee.
The 22nd-ranked Bulldogs are scheduled to face No. 25 Memphis at 1 p.m. at the Leftwich Tennis Center. MSU is hoping to add onto its 11-match winning streak against the Tigers that dates back to 1987.
The Bulldogs lead the overall series 19-13 and have a 7-6 edge in matches played at Memphis. State claimed a 4-1 win during the last meeting between the two teams in Starkville in 2022 and also brought home a 4-3 victory the last time they squared off in Memphis in 2007.
The Bulldogs (4-3) are attempting to bounce back from a tight 4-3 road loss at Middle Tennessee last Friday.
Mississippi State is led by No. 13 Petar Jovanovic at the top of its singles' lineup. The 6-foot-4 native of Montenegro also makes up half of the nation's 24th-ranked doubles duo alongside fellow sophomore Benito Sanchez Martinez.
Wednesday's match will also be a homecoming of sorts for Bulldog freshman Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes. Ferrer Guimaraes grew up in Lakeland, Tennessee, graduated from Memphis University School last spring and was recently named the 2023 Most Outstanding Boy Player of the Year by USTA Tennessee.
Memphis is 6-1 this year and has won back-to-back matches, including a 4-3 victory at Arkansas in its most recent action on Sunday. The Tigers' lone loss came against then ninth-ranked Stanford during ITA Kickoff Weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Memphis is headlined by No. 80 Pau Fanlo and features a roster filled with four seniors and seven upperclassmen.
New ITA team and player rankings will be released on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
