February 04, 2024 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga.– Redshirt freshman Drew Wilson led four representatives of the No. 19 Mississippi State men's golf at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate on Sunday. Wilson shot 2-under 70 in the final round to finish third in his collegiate debut.
Â
Wilson carded six birdies on Sunday and ended as the highest-placing freshman in the field. His performance in the final round added to a phenomenal debut for the Potts Camp, Mississippi, native that saw him shoot a career-low, 7-under 65 in the second round.
Â
Wilson was named to the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate All-Tournament Team for his efforts. He had shot even par at the turn with two birdies on his ledger. The redshirt freshman birdied four of the final nine holes to offset a pair of bogeys along the way.
Â
State's second-highest finisher was another freshman in Alejandro Fierro. Fierro added two birdies to his ledger on the tournament and finished tied for 22nd, marking the highest finish of his career.
Â
David Beard opened strong shooting 2-under through the first 11 holes of the tournament, before a triple bogey on No. 15 brought his score to 1-over for the round. He still finished in a tie for 33rd, earning his first top-50 finish in his collegiate debut. Bo Blanchard finished 67th.
Â
The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to the first team tournament of the spring, the Watersound Invitational in Panama City Beach, Florida, on February 19-21.
