February 19, 2024 | Men's Golf
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – No. 18 Mississippi State men's golf opened its first team tournament of 2024 on Monday, shooting 5-under at the Watersound Invitational. The Bulldogs shot a combined 283, landing them in a tie with Clemson for second place. State currently sits five strokes back from the leader, No. 3 Vanderbilt, and holds a stroke advantage over Notre Dame.Â
"Overall, I am pleased with how we played today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We got off to a great start and had a lot of momentum on our side. Unfortunately, Hole 14 really hurt us down the stretch and killed the momentum we had. We need to make sure we remain disciplined the entire round tomorrow. We have a great opportunity ahead of us and we are excited for the challenge in front of us."Â
Hunter Logan led the Bulldogs through the opening 18 holes for the third consecutive tournament. He stands tied for the individual lead at 6-under, carding eight birdies, including six on the back nine, to open the tournament. Â
"Hunter played some big-time golf on the back nine to hold things together for us," Smith added. "I thought we stayed very committed to our process and our focus on what makes us play well."Â
Logan started slow, shooting 2-over through the first five holes. From there, however, he would go bogey-free for the rest of the round. Birdies on holes Nos. 6 and 9 brought him back even par, before he shot 6-under on the back nine, the best nine-hole performance of anyone in the field. Logan's 66 is his 11th par or better round of the year and his ninth in the 60s. Â
Garrett Endicott joined Logan under par. He carded six birdies over the course of an up-and-down day to finish at 1-under and tied for 15th place. Endicott's 71 marks his ninth par or better round this season, which is good for the second-most on the team, alongside Josep Serra.Â
Serra, Drew Wilson, Harrison Davis and Alejandro Fierro each shot 1-over on the day and sit in an 11-way tie for 37th place. Those four combined for 16 of MSU's 29 birdies during the round. Each at one point sat at 2-under over the course of the opening round, before each shooting over par across the back nine to finish at 1-over 73.Â
The Bulldogs will tee off at 10:00 a.m. CT on Tuesday from the No. 10 tee to start the second round. Â
