The Final Horn: State 91, Prairie View A&M 84
December 08, 2024 | Men's Basketball, Joel Coleman
A quick rundown of MSU’s win over the Panthers.
THE BOTTOM LINE: It's been said many times before that it's not how you start but how you finish that counts. Such was definitely the case for Mississippi State on Sunday as the Bulldogs found themselves in a 15-point first-half hole and struggling before digging out and ultimately topping Prairie View A&M 91-84 at Humphrey Coliseum. The Panthers reeled off a 13-0 run midway through the opening period and MSU found itself down 27-12. Slowly but surely though, State fought back into the contest, made it a 44-all game by halftime, took a lead less than two minutes into the second half, led for the majority of the remainder of the game.
KEY NUMBERS: The individual performances of Josh Hubbard and Claudell Harris Jr. were vital on Sunday. The duo combined for 46 points with Hubbard scoring 25 and Harris tallying 21. They scored 16 points apiece over the final 20 minutes to fend off the scrappy Panthers. Much of the damage done by Hubbard and Harris came from long range as they made seven of their 16 three-point tries. Three other Bulldogs reached double figures in scoring as Shawn Jones Jr. had 11 points. RJ Melendez and Michael Nwoko each totaled 10.
NEXT UP FOR THE DAWGS: Mississippi State will head just up the road to Tupelo to face McNeese in a neutral site game at Cadence Bank Arena on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tip time is set for 5 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPNU.
