A quick rundown of MSU’s win over the Panthers.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Mississippi State was determined to bounce back from a disappointing showing against Butler last week and did exactly that with an emphatic, dominant 90-57 victory over No. 18 Pittsburgh on Wednesday night at the Humphrey Coliseum as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge. In what was almost certainly the Bulldogs' best showing all season, State controlled the evening from the opening tip onward, smothering the Panthers defensively and shining offensively for the largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in program history. MSU never trailed in the contest, earned a double-digit advantage just over 10 minutes in and led by as many as 35 points on the way to the lopsided triumph that moves State to 7-1 overall this season.
KEY NUMBERS: This one was all Maroon and White across virtually every statistical category. On the offensive end, five Bulldogs scored at least 10 points, led by KeShawn Murphy's 20. Michael Nwoko had 18, Josh Hubbard totaled 12, and Claudell Harris Jr. and RJ Melendez each put up 10. Cameron Matthews scored nine to go along with a team-high 13 rebounds. Overall, the Bulldogs shot 57.8 percent as a team with a 64 percent mark over the final 20 minutes to run away with the game. Meanwhile, the Dawg defense made everything tough on the Panthers. Pitt shot just 31.3 percent as a group, turned the ball over 11 times leading to 15 Mississippi State points and got outrebounded by MSU 49 to 27.
NEXT UP FOR THE DAWGS: Mississippi State and Prairie View A&M will go to battle this Sunday, Dec. 8. The game is set for a 3 p.m. tip at Humphrey Coliseum, and it can be streamed via SEC Network+.
