Mississippi State Awaits Alcorn State Sunday

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball returns to action inside Humprey Coliseum this weekend when it hosts Alcorn State on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m. CT.

Sunday will be the 13th time that Mississippi State and Alcorn State has tipped off on the hardwood. Mississippi State leads the series 10-2 all-time and 7-1 at home. The two in-state programs last matched up when now graduate student guard Jerkaila Jordan turned in 26 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to propel Mississippi State to a 77-42 win in its season opener win inside Humphrey Coliseum on Nov. 6, 2023. Mississippi State looks to extend a five-game winning streak in the series.
Alcorn State enters the weekend with a 1-1 record after it defeated Mississippi University for Women, 106-56, on Thursday, Nov. 7. Alcorn State is one of seven Southwestern Athletic Conference programs that Mississippi State has faced under Head Coach Sam Purcell.
Mississippi State makes it a point of emphasis to try to play Division I programs within the state of Mississippi. Not including SEC opponent Ole Miss, Mississippi State has played the other Mississippi Division I programs 28 times since 2010. Mississippi State owns a 27-1 record in those games.
Mississippi State opened its season with an emphatic 100-56 win over Memphis inside Humphrey Coliseum on Thursday.
The story of the Memphis game was all about the debuts. Graduate student guard/forward Eniya Russell introduced herself to the crowd with a career-high 26 points on 10-15 from the field and 4-8 from three in 25 minutes, while junior center Madina Okot added a double-double performance of 14 points and 17 rebounds in 23 minutes. The transfers combined for 71 of Mississippi State's 100 points. In addition to Russell and Okot's performances, redshirt junior guard Destiney McPhaul finished with 11 points and three steals, junior guard Denim DeShields added nine points and graduate student guard/forward Chandler Prater neared a double-double in her return from injury with nine points and nine rebounds.
Mississippi State eclipsed 100 points for the third time overall and the second time in a season opener under Purcell.
Leading 36-25 at half, Mississippi State scored 30 or more points in both the third and fourth quarter for the most points scored in a half under Purcell with 64 and the most overall since the Bulldogs scored 66 points in the first half against Troy on Nov. 18, 2019. Mississippi State boasted a 46-16 advantage in points in the paint, 23-4 in points off the turnovers and outrebounded their opponent 61-33.
With the win, Mississippi State improved to 18-1 in non-conference home games inside Humphrey Coliseum under Purcell. Mississippi State has won eight of its last nine non-conference games, excluding the SEC Tournament, dating back to the 2023-24 season. Mississippi State is 29-6 overall in non-conference games over the last two seasons.
With one of the best home court advantages across the nation, Mississippi State has ranked in the top-25 nationally in final average home attendance each of the last nine seasons. Mississippi State is 28-7 overall at home, 10-6 in SEC and 18-1 in non-conference, under Purcell. Entering the 2024-25 season, Mississippi State is 136-23 in home games and 78-3 in non-conference home games over the last 10 seasons.
Entering his third season at the helm, Purcell is the only head coach in program history and one of six in SEC women's basketball since 2000 to record consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins in each of their first two seasons. He has totaled the most overall wins (45 - 10 more than the next), most SEC wins (17 - 7 more than the next) and most NCAA Tournament wins (2 - no other head coach has recorded one) of any head coach through their first two seasons in program history.
Graduate student guard Jerkaila Jordan is also back for her final season at Mississippi State after set surpasses career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and minutes totals in 2023-24. She earned a spot on the 2025 Preseason Coaches' All-SEC Second Team on Oct. 24, voted on by the conference head coaches and was the only player in the SEC to average at least 15.0 points (16.2), 5.0 rebounds (5.9), 2.0 assists (2.4) and 2.0 steals (2.1) per game in 2023-24.
Mississippi State will take on seven opponents ranked in the Associated Press and/or USA TODAY Coaches' Preseason Polls with six more opponents currently receiving votes in either poll. Within its schedule, 14 games of Mississippi State's 30 games will be against opponents that are either ranked or receiving votes in either preseason poll and will tip off with 14 teams that made the 2024 NCAA Tournament with 15 games of its 30 games against such teams.
Mississippi State will play its third game in six days to open the schedule when it hosts its second-annual Education Day game against Alabama State on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. CT.
