STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball tips off its 2024-25 run when it hosts Memphis inside Humphrey Coliseum on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. CT.Â

Thursday will be the 33rd time that Mississippi State and Memphis has met on the hardwood. Mississippi State leads the series 10-4 in Starkville, but trails 14-18 all-time. It is only the second time since 2008-09 and in as many seasons that Mississippi State and Memphis has faced each other. Mississippi State brought home an 81-63 win inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse in Memphis, Tenn. last season on Dec. 17, 2023. Mississippi State looks to extend a five-game winning streak in the series.

Memphis is 1-0 on the season after it defeated Mississippi Valley State, 89-78, on Monday, Nov. 4 inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Memphis is one of two American Athletic Conference programs that Mississippi State has faced under Head Coach Sam Purcell. Mississippi State is 2-0 against the conference under Purcell, both of which were played in 2023-24.Â

In addition to last season's meeting with Memphis, Mississippi State ran past Tulsa, 102-58, on Nov. 26, 2023, to be named 2023 Van Chancellor Classic Champions at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.Â

Mississippi State is 38-12 all-time, including 33-1 at home and 2-0 under Purcell, in season openers. Mississippi State is currently on a 20-game winning streak in season openers and last lost a season opener at Baylor, 45-88, on Nov. 21, 2003. Under Purcell, Mississippi State defeated Mississippi Valley State, 104-47, on Nov. 9, 2022 and Alcorn State, 77-42, on Nov. 6, 2023.

Back for Mississippi State is 2024 All-SEC Second Team selection and now graduate student guard Jerkaila Jordan. Jordan set her career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and minutes totals in 2023-24. She earned a spot on the 2025 Preseason Coaches' All-SEC Second Team on Oct. 24, voted on by the conference head coaches and was the only player in the SEC to average at least 15.0 points (16.2), 5.0 rebounds (5.9), 2.0 assists (2.4) and 2.0 steals (2.1) per game in 2023-24.

Mississippi State added seven transfers in Denim DeShields (UAB), Destiney McPhaul (Northwest Florida State College), Eniya Russell (Kentucky), Terren Ward (Georgia Southern), Chandler Prater (Oklahoma State), Kayla Thomas (Georgia Southern) and Madina Okot (Zetech University) and three freshman in Tahj-Monet Bloom (DME Academy), Shakirah Edwards (Rutherford High School) and Anaisha Carriere (Harrison Central High School) to its roster in 2024-25.Â

Mississippi State will take on seven opponents ranked in the Associated Press and/or USA TODAY Coaches' Preseason Polls with six more opponents currently receiving votes in either poll. Within its schedule, 14 games of Mississippi State's 30 games will be against opponents that are either ranked or receiving votes in either preseason poll and will tip off with 14 teams that made the 2024 NCAA Tournament with 15 games of its 30 games against such teams.
Mississippi State will continue its five-game homestand to open the schedule with Alcorn State on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m. CT.
