MSU Earns Eight Wins In Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mississippi State's women's tennis team picked up eight wins on the opening day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Friday.
Athina Pitta finished the day undefeated, picking up a pair of singles wins and a doubles triumph. Pitta began the day pairing up with Emma Cohen to take down ETSU's Ralitsa Alexandrova and Jana Rovira 7-6(1). In singles play, the sophomore from Greece defeated Georgia's Sarah Branicki 6-2, 6-1 and battled to a 7-6(3), 7(11) victory over South Alabama's Delien Kleinhans.
Maria Rizzolo also tacked on a pair of singles victories by defeating South Alabama's Rio Maeda 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. Then, Rizzolo took down Auburn's Emma Tothova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the second.
Chiara Di Genova, Alessia Tagliente and Carolina Troiano each earned singles wins on Friday. Di Genova defeated Meera Jesudason of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-2, Tagliente cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over ETSU's Ksenija Rage and Troiano battled to a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over Alabama's Klara Milicevic on her home court.
Tournament play continues Saturday with two rounds of doubles beginning at 9 a.m. and another session of singles.
In the second round of doubles play, Jayna Clemens and Gianna Oboniye will take on Alexandrova and Rovira. Cohen and Pitta face Allie Gretkowski and Lika Persypkina of Louisville. Di Genova and Rizzolo square off against Louisville's Elisabeth Lila and Alice Otis. Tagliente and Troiano take on Rage and Julia Millan.
In the third round of doubles, Clemens and Oboniye face Julie Bedard and Ava Esposito Cogan of Auburn. Cohen and Pitta battle against Lila and Otis. Di Genova and Rizzolo take on Kleinhans and Millan. Tagliente and Troiano square off against Tothova and Alice Battesti.
After the conclusion of doubles action, Tagliente faces Otis, Cohen takes on Alabama's Ansley Cheshire, Troiano squares off against Jesudason and Di Genova battles against Kleinhans. Also in action, Pitta battles Rovira, Clemens faces Manal Ennaciri of South Alabama, Rizzolo takes on Milan and Oboniye squares off with Milicevic.
Tuscaloosa native Ava Rath is listed as an alternate player for round three of singles play.
