
Pitta Wins A Pair To Start ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – Mississippi State's Athina Pitta picked up a pair of wins on the opening day of the ITA Southern Regional Championships on Thursday.
Pitta began the day by defeating Troy's Emilia Namyslo 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round of the singles qualifying round. Later that afternoon, she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Louisiana-Monroe's Lucia Jorrin Fernandez to earn a spot in the 64-player singles draw, which starts on Friday.
The Bulldogs will have eight players in action on Friday beginning with the doubles main draw. Pitta joins forces with fellow sophomore Jayna Clemens to take on North Alabama's Lena Karlovcan and Eeva Ristola at 9 a.m. Freshman Emma Cohen and Gianna Oboniye pair up to face Delanie Tribby and Jiayun Zhu of Tulane at 9:45 a.m.
Two MSU tandems, Chiara Di Genova and Maria Rizzolo along with Alessia Tagliente and Carolina Troiano, received opening round byes and await their second round opponents at 10:30 a.m.
After the conclusion of doubles play, six other bulldogs join Pitta in the singles main draw. Oboniye squares off against LSU's Kenna Erickson, Clemens matches up with Tulane's Brooke Theis and Rizzolo battles Emma Kette of Ole Miss with all three of those matches slated to start at 1 p.m.
At 2 p.m. Pitta takes on Tulane's Leigh Van Zyl. Tagliente plays against LSU's Gaby Rivera at 3 p.m. while Di Genova takes the court against Erica Hagi of McNeese State at 4 p.m. Troiano closes out the day for the Dawgs by taking on Maria Tsironi of Louisiana Tech at 4:30 p.m.
