Soccer Set for Sunday Night Duel with Arizona State
August 19, 2023 | Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz. – In a highly anticipated Pac-12 versus SEC matchup, the Bulldogs (1-0-0) are set to face off against a very talented Arizona State squad (1-0-0) in what promises to be an exhilarating showdown on the pitch on Sunday night. Both teams look to maintain their hot starts and make a statement early in the season.
Sunday night will mark only the third meeting versus the Pac-12 for the Bulldogs, previously facing USC (2004) and Arizona State (2021). The Bulldogs and Sun Devils have met once before in 2021 where the Maroon & Gold came out victorious with a scrappy 1-0 result in Starkville.
The Sun Devils are led by Graham Winkworth who enters his seventh year as head coach after leading the team into the 2022 NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Arizona State had an overall record of 9-6-3 in 2022, highlighted by the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons. The Sun Devils took down Pac-12 foes Arizona, Oregon, California, and Colorado during the regular season, but fell to No. 8 seed Portland 3-0 in the first round of postseason competition. ASU enters the season with 16 returners and 15 newcomers, including three transfers.
The Bulldogs, coming off a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Grand Canyon University in the season opener, look to build on their impressive start. Offensively, the Bulldogs were on the attack early and often as they took eight shots in the first 18 minutes against the Lopes, capitalizing on stellar defense at the 17' to take a 1-nill lead. In the 70', MSU capitalized once again, this time in the offensive zone, netting the second goal of the game which was ultimately the difference in the contest. With solid defense and a sharp attacking line, they are poised to test their mettle against Arizona State's challenges.
On the other side of the matchup, Arizona State displayed their skill and determination in a 4-0 win during their first outing against Wright State. Against the Raiders, ASU's 12 second-half shots produced five shots of goal, four of which found the back of the net.
Sunday night's match will be streamed via the Pac-12 Network and is scheduled for a 9 P.M. CT start.
