Bulldogs Set For Competitive Cross Country Slate
August 17, 2023 | Cross Country
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State will open the cross country season on Sept. 1 to kick off a five-meet regular season before running at the SEC Championship in October and the South Region Championship in November.
Â
The Bulldogs will stay in-state for their first race, heading to Jackson, Mississippi, for The Opener hosted by Mississippi College. Two weeks later, MSU will travel to Huntsville, Alabama, for The Southern Showcase on Sept. 15. That meet will be hosted by Jacksonville State.
Â
"Our cross country schedule, we feel like, is pretty straightforward and to the point. It's all championship driven," head coach Chris Woods said. "We're using each one of our competitions to better prepare us for the Southeastern Conference Championship and regional championship. We're setting our sights solely on the conference championship, and we can't get there until we have our first competition here in our home state. We're really excited about the season and look forward to seeing what it has in store for us."
Â
State will split the squad on Sept. 29-30. A contingent of Bulldogs will head north to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for the Paul Short Invite hosted by Lehigh. A second group will stay in the conference and run at the Gans Creek Classic hosted by Missouri.
Â
"We're really excited about the group that we have coming in," Woods added. "We think it's one of our more talented groups that we've had in recent years. We will be relying on the freshmen a little bit this year, but that just goes to show the type of recruiting class that Coach Erin [Stenman-Fahey] was able to pull together. We've just got to make sure we keep our kids healthy and that they are the best prepared that they can be whenever they go into competition.
Â
The regular season finale will be run in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, at the Crimson Classic on Oct. 13. MSU then turns its focus to the postseason, which begins on Oct. 27 in Columbia, South Carolina. The Gamecocks will host this year's SEC Championship. The South Region Championship on Nov. 10 is also hosted by an SEC foe as the Bulldogs will travel to Gainesville, Florida.
Â
Should MSU qualify, the NCAA Championships are slated for Nov. 18 at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Virginia. The top two teams at each regional secure an automatic bid to the championship, and the first four individuals not on an automatically qualifying or at-large team will also advance. The NCAA will select 13 at-large teams and two at-large individuals.
