
Hines Named Finalist for Ferriss Trophy

The Ferriss Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding college player in Mississippi
JACKSON – Mississippi State infielder Hunter Hines has been named one of five finalists for the 2023 Ferris Trophy presented by MBCI and Pearl River Resort, it was announced Friday (May 12).
The Ferriss Trophy is named in memory of former Major League star and longtime Delta State baseball coach Dave "Boo" Ferriss and is presented annually to the most outstanding college player in Mississippi. This will be the 19h presentation of the award. The winner will be announced at a luncheon held at the Golden Moon Casino at Pearl River Resort on May 22nd.
In the 18-year history of the award, seven Diamond Dawgs have earned the Ferriss Trophy on eight different occasions, with Jake Mangum (2016 & 19) the only MSU student-athlete to earn the award twice. Tanner Allen (2021), Brent Rooker (2017), Hunter Renfroe (2012), Chris Stratton (2012), Ed Easley (2007) and Thomas Berkery (2006) have each walked away as Ferriss Trophy winners. The eight winners of the award are the most by any school in the state of Mississippi.
Over his sophomore season at MSU, Hines has shined for the Diamond Dawgs. Entering the series at LSU, he leads the team in home runs (22) and RBIs (57). He is the first player at MSU to hit 20 or more homers in a single season since Brent Rooker hit 23 during the 2017 season. He is hitting .313 this season and hitting .304 in SEC games.
His 22 home runs rank third in the nation and second in the Southeastern Conference and are tied for the sixth most in school history. The 57 runs batted in are the eighth most in the SEC. He has 16 multi-hit games this season, the most on the team. Hines also leads the team with a .736 slugging percentage and 57 hits.
In his two years wearing the Maroon and White, Hines has hit 38 home runs, the 10th most in a career at Mississippi State, while posting a .306 batting average.
Four position players and one pitcher make up the finalists this year. Along with Hines, Ole Miss has Kemp Alderman, Southern Miss is represented by right-handed pitcher Tanner Hall and outfielder Slade Wilks with Ty Hill of Jackson State in the final vote.
The finalists for this prestigious award are selected by a panel of coaches and professional scouts.
The luncheon is open to the public but tickets to the event must be purchased in advance online at www.msfame.com or by calling the Hall of Fame offices at 601-982-8264. All proceeds from the event benefit the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
