State ending spring practice season with annual scrimmage.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State is ending a vigorous few weeks of spring football practice in front of its fans with its annual Maroon & White Game at Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday.
The team will display some of its new schemes while highlighting a multitude of players that are sure to stand out in the coming year in a way that is both beneficial and entertaining according to head coach Zach Arnett.
"We'd like to try to make it as much of a competitive, fair matchup as we can and let the guys play a real football game,"Â Arnett said.
Both squads that will be playing in the scrimmage will line up in a way that provides an even matchup. Arnett explained how he and his staff have divided the teams into first-string and second-string players ahead of the contest to ensure that there is a level playing field.
"We're trying to get as much good-on-good competition as possible," Arnett said. "We're going to split the roster into two teams, essentially one offense and two defense are married up on a team, and they're playing the one defense versus the two offense."
Aside from providing a fun afternoon for everyone, the well-matched teams will give coaches a chance to see how effective the weeks of offseason practices have been in preparing players on both sides of the football. The biggest playmakers will rise to the top and are sure to put on a show.
"Hopefully we'll see a competitive matchup that's back and forth, and there's a reason to get excited about players making plays," Arnett said.
There's no better time for a true football scrimmage than this weekend. The city of Starkville and Mississippi State are enjoying Super Bulldog Weekend, one of the top events of the year. It attracts thousands of people to campus to attend big sporting events and enjoy everything that Starkville has to offer. Between the fans that fill up the stands at Davis Wade Stadium to the recruits that are witnessing everything that the university has to offer, Arnett said that it's going to be a great weekend for some gridiron action.
"Starkville is a special place, it's full of special people and they're obviously all here this weekend," Arnett said. "I'm excited to have a lot of recruits on campus and people to show up for the spring game."
The game will kick off at noon, and in addition to the football contest, Dak the Bulldog will be crowned the next mascot of Mississippi State during the Passing of the Harness ceremony.
