State Falls To Georgia In Friday Matchup

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State volleyball team dropped a three-set contest [25-23, 25-20, 25-16] to the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night in the Newell-Grissom Building.
MSU moves to 8-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while Georgia improves to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Sophie Agee posted a team-high seven kills on the night, followed by a six-kill performance on a .455 hitting percentage from Rebecca Walk. Walk also added three blocks on the night.
Sanaa Williams totaled five kills on a .375 hitting mark and two blocks. Karli Schmidt came away with four kills and a block, whereas Caylee Sharkey provided three kills and two blocks.
Setters Alexa Fortin Goede and Emily Oerther combined for 21 assists in the match, along with 11 digs. Individually, Goede tallied nine assists and four digs, while Oerther issued a team-best 12 assists and added seven digs.
Lauren Myrick paced the backcourt defense for State, collecting 15 digs during the match. Defensive specialist Mary Neal provided six digs of her own.
For the match, State saw 866 of the Maroon and White in the stands. The 866 Bulldog fans mark the third-largest crowd for the 2023 campaign.
"When I walked out during warmups, it was incredible to see so many good fans," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "They are unbelievable. We felt the energy. They tried to pull us through. I appreciate everyone coming out tonight. They are awesome as always and I hope to see them Sunday for Texas A&M."
Mississippi State returns to action at home on Sunday, Oct. 8 to face Texas A&M for the second time this season. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
