Mississippi State Kicks Off 2022 Campaign With Irish Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Mississippi State volleyball team opens their 2022 season in South Bend, Ind. this weekend for the Irish Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.Â

The Bulldogs kick off the tournament against Milwaukee at 3:30 p.m. CT on Friday, then take on the Notre Dame the following day at 4 p.m. CT.Â

State is coming off their best season in program history as the team earned their first NCAA Tournament bid. The Bulldogs put together an overall 25-6 record and picked up 16 conference wins. For the 2022 season, MSU has 13 returners, including six starters.Â
Â
Last season, State was led offensively by Gabby Waden, who led the team in kills (429), 10-plus kill performances (22) and points (479.5). Among Waden, Shania Cromartie, Lauren Myrick, Sania Petties, Deja Robinson and Rebecca Walk all garned a kill per set.Â

Six newcomers are joining the team this season, with two transfers – Lacey Jeffcoat (Troy) and Emily Oerther (Penn State) – as well as four talented freshmen in Sophie Agee, Georgia Anne McCarter, Caylee Sharkey and Sanaa Williams.Â

MSU will face Milwaukee on Friday, making it the second time in program history the Bulldogs have faced the Panthers. Last time there was a matchup against the Bulldogs and Panthers was on Sept. 2, 2005, where MSU earned a 3-1 victory. Last year, Milwaukee went 22-9 overall and 16-2 in conference play.Â

State is also facing Notre Dame for the second time in program history. The Irish went 13-15 overall and 10-8 in conference play.Â
