JavU Strikes Gold on Day One of the SEC Outdoor Championships
May 13, 2022 | Track & Field
OXFORD – For the second consecutive season, DJ Jónsson won gold in the men's javelin. It's the second time in the Mississippi State's men's program history that a JavU member has gone back-to-back in the event at the SEC Outdoor Championships (Anderson Peters, 2018-19).
The MSU men's program currently sits in fourth place in the team standings after Jónsson and teammate Franck DiSanza both finished in the top six of the men's javelin event.
On the track, both Sydney Steely (women's) and Navasky Anderson (men's) successfully advanced to Saturday's final in the 800-meter race after winning their respective heat. Steely will race at 6:45 p.m. CT on Saturday evening, followed by Anderson ten minutes later.
Over in the multis, Asia Poe and Shayla Broughton both finished the first day in the top three of the women's heptathlon. The duo won the first two events (Broughton – 100m hurdles; Poe – high jump), then each placed a second-place finish in the final two events of the day (Poe – shot put; Broughton – 200m). The heptathlon will conclude Friday as the duo looks to increase their personal point-total in the long jump, javelin and 800-meter race.
