Dawgs Win 12-Inning Thriller Over No. 2 Arkansas
April 03, 2022 | Baseball
Luke Hancock had the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 12th
Luke Hancock made a game-saving double play in the bottom of the 11th that prevented the Razorbacks from walking it off, while he followed up with the eventual game-winning RBI single in the top of the 12th to give State a 4-3 lead. Logan Tanner followed up with an RBI single of his own to give MSU an insurance run before closing it out in the bottom half of the 12th inning.
Jackson Fristoe (3-2) earned the win after holding the Hogs scoreless over the final 3.2 innings and striking out four over that span. Cade Smith started for MSU and allowed two runs – both earned – on three hits with six strikeouts over five innings. Brooks Auger came on to start the sixth and held Arkansas to a run on three hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Hancock ended the game 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs, while Tanner was 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs driven in on the afternoon. State out-hit Arkansas, 9-8, on Sunday in Fayetteville.
State took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run to rightfield by Luke Hancock, his second long ball of the weekend. Two innings later, RJ Yeager added to MSU's lead with a solo home run of his own to leftfield to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
Arkansas responded in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left by Zack Gregory, who made it a one-run game between the Razorbacks and Diamond Dawgs.
The Hogs tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on another solo home run, this one off the bat of centerfielder Braydon Webb.
Logan Tanner gave State the lead once again in sixth on a solo home run to left, but the back-and-forth continued as Arkansas tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half.
The Diamond Dawgs will open a 9-game homestand on Tuesday, April 5, versus UT Martin. Mississippi State will host No. 11 LSU in a three-game set on April 8-10 at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville.
