April 23, 2022 | Baseball
Hunter Hines hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the 7th that gave State the lead
Mississippi State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Luke Hancock solo home run, but Ole Miss quickly responded with back-to-back-to-back home runs to start the bottom half of the inning and take a 3-1 lead. The Rebels added a solo homer in the second, but Preston Johnson and Pico Kohn then combined to hold Ole Miss scoreless for the next five frames, allowing the Bulldog offense to complete the comeback.
The Diamond Dawgs cut the lead to one in the sixth on RBI base hits by Jess Davis and RJ Yeager, followed by Hunter Hines' go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh to give State its first lead since the first. Kellum Clark also homered in the seventh to extend the lead before State scored three runs in the eighth for some much-needed insurance. State's offense scored nine runs over the final four innings.
Preston Johnson started for Mississippi State and settled in after a rocky start to pitch 5.0 innings, while striking out eight and walking three. Freshman Pico Kohn (2-0) entered the game in relief in the sixth and picked up the win after holding Ole Miss scoreless while allowing just one hit and striking out three in 2.0 innings. KC Hunt pitched the final 2.0 innings for the Dawgs, striking out two and allowing three runs on four hits.
Offensively, the Dawgs tied a season-high with 18 hits on the night, led by Brad Cumbest's 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Five different Bulldogs recorded multi-hit games, including Cumbest, Luke Hancock (3-for-5), Logan Tanner (3-for-4), Hunter Hines (2-for-5) and Lane Forsythe (2-for-5).
