Clegg with Solid Start at SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – After the first 18 holes were completed at the 2022 SEC Men's Golf Championship, Ford Clegg led the Bulldogs in the standings.

Clegg shot bogey-free for 17 consecutive holes and added on three birdies in the mix to earn himself a score of 2-under par (68). Clegg's first round performance gave him a tied for 8th placement heading into the second round.

As a team, the Bulldogs shot a 5-over score to tie for seventh with the Kentucky Wildcats. State went even for par for 65 holes through Round 1.

"I thought we did a nice job of battling today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "I felt like we had all five guys in the round and did a good job of playing our games. We need to continue to embrace our opportunity and play within ourselves in order to be successful this week."

Ruan Pretorius played steady golf going even for par for 15 holes, the second most out of the playing field. Pretorius is tied for 20th at 1-over.

Hunter Logan tacked on three birdies throughout play. Logan sits tied for 34th at 2-over.

Ben Nelson had the second-lowest par 5 scoring on the day (1-under) and will head into the second round of the SEC Championship at 4-over. Pedro Cruz Silva is not far behind at 5-over.

State will be paired with Kentucky and Auburn for the second round. The Bulldogs will tee off from Hole 1 for a 7:00 a.m. CT start with Cruz Silva leading off.
