Bulldogs Shoot 6-Under During Second Round of SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Mississippi State men's golf shot their season best round of 276 during the second round of the 2022 SEC Men's Golf Championship. Today's 6-under performance for the Bulldogs is tied for fourth in lowest rounds in program history.

State now sits at 1-under overall for 8th place. Friday's final round of stroke play will determine if the Bulldogs advance to the quarterfinals in match play.

As a team, Mississippi State tacked on 14 birdies during the second round with three players scoring under par. The Bulldogs hold an average score of 4.75 on par-5's with a score of 5-under, the third lowest out of the playing field.

"We were able to play with a lot of toughness today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We did a great job of being better at the end which is what we want to be about. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for this group. We need to trust what we have been preparing for all year and go play with freedom and confidence. Tomorrow is going to be fun."

Leading the Bulldogs, Ford Clegg is in contention with some of the nation's top ranked players sitting at tied for 2nd after his 2-under second round score. Clegg went bogey-free for all 18 holes today, tacking on two birdies on Holes 4 and 15. Clegg will head into the final round of stroke play at 4-under overall.

Hunter Logan maintained a bogey-free front nine to start out his second round. Throughout play, Logan added four birdies to give him a 2-under score that brought him to even par overall and tied for 23rd.

Both Pedro Cruz Silva and Ruan Pretorius completed the second round at 2-over overall. Cruz Silva had a standout day with five birdies, converting four of them in a row on Holes 15 through 18. Cruz Silva shot for 67, 3-under, which marks his career-low 18-hole score.

Pretorius tacked on three birdies on Thursday. His final birdie on Hole 18 put State at their current spot at 1-under overall.

To advance to the quarterfinals in match play, Mississippi State must sit among the top-8 teams in the playing field after the three rounds of stroke play. The Bulldogs will begin the final round tomorrow at approximately 7:00 a.m. CT off of Hole 1. State will have 10-minute intervals between each player and will be paired with the Missouri Tigers and the Tennessee Vols.
