Men’s Golf Claims Season-Best Finish at Mossy Oak Collegiate
April 12, 2022 | Men's Golf
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State men's golf team went out with a bang by wrapping up its regular season with a season-best finish of tied for 3rd at its home event, the Mossy Oak Collegiate.
The Bulldogs posted an overall score of 854, 10-under, in the events of three rounds at the Mossy Oak Golf Course. This ties for best 54-hole score of the season for Mississippi State. With their third-place finish, State claimed victory over two top-20 nationally ranked teams.
"I'm happy with the way we competed this week," head coach Dusty Smith said. "With nine holes to go, we had a good chance. We just didn't capitalize on the back nine like we are capable of. We need to continue to grow and learn from being in those positions. The elite teams handle being uncomfortable, and that is the main difference."
"Really proud of Hunter [Logan] this week. He continues to get better and grow which is what our program is about. Now we head into the best time of year: championship season. We look forward to our next opportunity."
Hunter Logan led the Bulldogs from start to finish in all three rounds of the 2022 Mossy Oak Collegiate. Logan had a 3-under score heading into the back nine of his final round but fell after a tough battle with Vanderbilt's Gordon Sargent for the lead. Logan ended in 2nd place with a 9-under overall score. This marks Logan's career-best finish and career-low 54-hole score.
Competing individually for the Bulldogs, Harrison Davis had a career-best day with a 66, 6-under, third round score that advanced him to a top-10 finish. Davis tallied five birdies, an eagle and a bogey-free front nine in the final round to give him a tied for 9th place finish – his best finish of his career.
Ford Clegg played very steady golf during his final round at Mossy Oak, going even for 15 holes. Clegg rounded out even for the tournament and tied for 23rd place.
Pedro Cruz Silva claimed a bogey-free front nine during the third round to give him his best round score of the tournament at even to par. Cruz Silva wrapped up his sophomore regular season at tied for 31st.
Ben Nelson ended his final regular season tournament with the Maroon and White at tied for 46th. Ruan Pretorius added on a tied for 59th place.
Individually for State, Austin Vukovits shot 1-under during the third round to grant him a tied for 41st placement. Loïc Ettlin and Jay Nimmo will head into the post season tied for 65th place for the tournament. William Wann finished at tied for 84th.
The Bulldogs will now move into post-season tournament time with the SEC Championship beginning April 20 at St. Simons Island, Ga.
