Women’s Tennis Falls At No. 23 Tennessee
March 04, 2022 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - No. 56 Mississippi State's women's tennis fell in its SEC opener to No. 23 Tennessee, 7-0.
The Bulldogs move to 8-4 on the season and 0-1 while the Volunteers are now 7-2.
Despite the score, singles play was very close between the two teams.
"The opportunities were there in singles," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "I felt like we were going to swing the match our way with some close first sets and Alex (Mikhailuk) winning hers 6-1."
In singles, MSU's 69th-ranked Emmanouela Antonaki fell to No. 30 Rebeka Mertena 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3. The Bulldogs' Alessia Tagliente lost in three sets after losing an incredibly close super tiebreaker 12-10 to Eleonaro Molinaro.
Alexandra Mikhailuk was the only State player to win their first set. But after taking the first set 6-1, she fell in the next two 6-2, 6-1 to Tennessee's Daria Kuczer.
Bulldog Chloé Cirotte played back-and-forth with Esther Adeshina, but ultimately fell to the Volunteer 7-5, 6-4.
Senior Magda Adaloglou overcame multiple set points against No. 39 Tenika McGiffin in her first set, but came up short in a tiebreaker 7-6(4) and dropped her second set 6-1.
The Bulldogs also lost the doubles point. Antonaki and Tamara Racine lost 6-2 to the No. 8 tandem of Tenika McGiffin and Daria Kuczer while Mikhailuk and Tagliente fell 6-1 to Mertena and Molinaro.
"I give credit to Tennessee today," Greenan said. "They competed very well. We would definitely need all six players on the court fully engaged in the battle to beat a team like Tennessee. Unfortunately, we did not play to our potential and our efforts were not enough."
