No. 24 Bulldogs Fall To Second-Ranked Vols

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's 24^th-ranked men's tennis team dropped its Southeastern Conference opener to No. 2 Tennessee 5-2 on Friday.

It was only the second opportunity the Bulldogs have had to play outdoors at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre during dual match play.

MSU (9-4) picked up a pair of singles victories on the afternoon. No. 39 Florian Broska earned his fourth ranked singles win of the spring following a 6-4, 7-6(4) triumph over No. 32 Adam Walton.

Broska has won 13 of his last 15 singles matches dating back to the fall. The graduate from Germany now has 93 career singles victories, good enough to stand alone for eighth all-time at State.

Gregor Ramskogler also earned a tight three-set victory over the Volunteers' Martim Prata. Ramskogler took the first set tiebreaker 7-6(9) but fell 6-4 in the second. He persevered and pulled away during the super tiebreaker, 10-1.

No. 74 Nemanja Malesevic saw his seven-match win streak come to a close with a loss to sixth-ranked Johannus Monday 6-2, 6-3. Carles Hernandez also fell to a ranked foe, losing to No. 51 Emile Hudd 6-3, 6-3.

The Bulldogs' Bautista Vilicich lost in straight sets to Angel Diaz 6-2, 6-3 as did Alberto Colas to Shunsuke Mitsui 7-6(3), 7-5.

Tennessee (13-2) also took the doubles point to start the match. The Vols' 57^th-ranked tandem of Walton and Pat Harper took down the No. 55 duo of Malesevic and Davide Tortora 6-1. Monday and Wallner clinched the point with their 6-1 win over Colas and Hernandez.

Mississippi State continues its homestand with a doubleheader on Sunday. The Bulldogs will host 22^nd-ranked Georgia at 1 p.m. followed by Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m.
