No. 24 MSU Splits Sunday Doubleheader

STARKVILLE – No. 24 Mississippi State split its doubleheader at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Sunday.

The Bulldogs dropped a top 25 battle with 22^nd-ranked Georgia 5-2 to start the day but bounced back with a 6-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State to close things out on a strong note.

The afternoon started off positively with MSU taking the doubles point against UGA. Alberto Colas and Carles Hernandez upset Georgia's No. 42 tandem of Blake Croyder and Erik Grevelius 6-4.

No. 55 Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora followed suit with their 7-6(5) victory over 41^st-ranked Trent Bryde and Philip Henning to secure the first point for the homestanding Bulldogs.

"I was impressed with how we competed in doubles," said MSU coach Matt Roberts. "We had some ups and downs on some courts but we stayed resilient and communicated well and got the doubles point, which was great for our team."

However, Mississippi State was only able to claim one singles victory as UGA and fell to 0-2 in Southeastern Conference play.

Gregor Ramskogler MSU prevailed over 76^th-ranked Croyder in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-1. It marked the third ranked singles win of Ramskogler's career and second this season.

Three singles matches went three sets with Georgia coming out on top in each. Malesevic, ranked 74^th in singles, won his first set 6-4 against No. 47 Tristan McCormick but lost the last two 6-3 and 6-1. Bautista Vilicich also jumped out to a 6-3 lead following the first set only to lose the next two 6-2, 6-4 to Bryde, who is ranked 79^th.

Henning, ranked 44^th in singles, claimed the first set against Hernandez 6-4. But Hernandez rallied to take the second 6-4 but succumbed in the final set 6-1 as Georgia improved to 2-0 in the league and 10-3 overall.

"I thought a few of our guys fought themselves a lot today," Roberts said. "That's going to happen when you want to win so bad and they're going to learn from today. They're going to get back to trusting their game, playing with purpose every point and letting the result happen."

In the second match of the day, MSU (10-5) swept instate foe Mississippi Valley State winning all six singles matches 6-0, 6-0. The two teams did not compete in doubles.

No. 39 Florian Broska's victory over Landon Smith signaled the 94^th singles win of his career, tying him for seventh all-time at Mississippi State with his former teammate Giovanni Oradini (2017-21).

Malesevic, Hernandez, Vilicich, Ramskogler and Tortora were also singles winners against the 0-6 Delta Devils. It was the fifth consecutive singles victory for Ramskogler, the second-longest streak in his career.

Sunday closed a six-match homestand for Mississippi State. MSU will now face four straight road matches starting at 42^nd-ranked LSU on Friday at 5 p.m.
