Dawgs Fall Short in Series Finale

STARKVILLE – No. 30 Mississippi State (15-10, 3-3 SEC) dropped the series finale, 6-2, to Alabama (14-11, 2-4 SEC) on Sunday (March 27) at Dudy Noble Field. Mississippi State won the series over Alabama with walk-off wins on Friday and Saturday.
State jumped out in the first to take an early lead of 1-0 but Alabama quickly scored a run in the second to tie the game. Alabama extended their lead in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings to secure the win.
Cade Smith (4-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs – all earned – on six hits and seven strikeouts through six innings of work. Brooks Auger came in at the start of the seventh inning allowing no runs and no hits with two strikeouts through 2.1 innings on the mound. Cam Tullar entered in the ninth followed by Jackson Fristoe who allowed one hit with one strikeout. Alabama's Grayson Hitt (2-0) earned the win for the Tide while Antoine Jean (1) picked up the save.
For the Bulldogs offensively, Logan Tanner led the way with a 2-for-4 effort with a double, one RBI and two hits. The only two runs of the day came in the first inning after Tanner doubled to left field which brought in Luke Hancock, and then in the seventh after a couple of singles, a fielder's choice and Hancock being hit by pitch with the bases loaded. The Dawgs reached base 15 times but left 10 men stranded.
Bottom First
Mississippi State took an early lead of 1-0 after Matt Corder drew a walk and Luke Hancock reached on a fielder's choice and came home to score on a Logan Tanner double to left field.

Alabama bounced back to tie the game after an Owen Diodati walk and a Bryce Elbin single through the right side which advanced Diodati to second. Drew Williamson singled to right field which scored Diodati.

Alabama took the lead following a Dominic Tamez single followed by an Eblin double to right-center to score Tamez.

The Tide added one run to their lead after Williamson hit a solo home run to right field on a 3-2 count.

Bottom Seventh
The Bulldogs scored one run to make it a one-run game in going into the eighth. Lane Forsythe singled up the middle followed by a Corder single and Kamren James fielder's choice which loaded the bases. Hancock collected an RBI after being hit by a pitch that brought Forsythe home.

Top Ninth
Alabama extends their lead, 6-2, following a Williamson walk, a Tommy Seidi intentional walk and a Zane Denton single to left which scored Williamson and advanced Seidi to second. Diodati singled through the right side to score Seidi and advance Denton to third followed by Tamez single up the middle which brought Denton home.

Mississippi State will take on the Memphis Tigers in a midweek match up on Tuesday, March 29, at AutoZone Park in Memphis, Tenn. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
