
State Explodes for 20 Runs To Top Georgia In Series Finale

For State, Cade Smith (4-0) started and earned the win after allowing three runs and striking out five in six full innings on the mound. Brooks Auger came on in the seventh and struck out two in a pair of scoreless frames, while Jackson Fristoe pitched a scoreless ninth for the Diamond Dawgs.
Four separate Dawgs recorded multi-hit games, including RJ Yeager who was 3-for-6 with a home run, double, five RBIs and two runs scored. Brad Cumbest was 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Hunter Hines was 1-for-3 with four RBIs after hitting a grand slam, while Kamren James enjoyed a four-hit day. Jess Davis was also 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

Mississippi State got on the board first in the series finale after Logan Tanner walked, took second on a wild pitch, reached third on a deep fly ball and then scored on a ground ball to first by Kellum Clark.

Bottom Second
Georgia answered with two runs in the bottom half after a double, walk and then two-run double in the gap by second baseman Cory Acton.

Georgia added to its lead in the third when Connor Tate singled with one out and later came around to score on an RBI single by Chaney Rogers.

Top Fourth
Two-out hitting was crucial for State in the fourth when RJ Yeager tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single, followed by a two-run double by Tanner Leggett that gave MSU a 5-3 lead.

Hunter Hines drew a 1-out walk in the fifth and later came around to score on an RBI single by Brad Cumbest to give MSU an insurance run.

The next inning, Hunter Hines came to the plate with bases loaded and jumped on the first pitch he saw for a grand slam to right field that made it a 7-run lead for State. Later in the inning, Jess Davis came to the plate for the second time in the sixth and cleared the bases with a three-run double that dropped in leftfield. Davis came around to score soon after on an RBI single by Kamren James for an 11-run lead.

Top Seventh
Brad Cumbest added to State's lead to in the seventh with a two-out solo home run to left-center that made it a 12-run advantage.

Top Eighth
State added five more runs in the eighth on three hits, including a three-run home run by RJ Yeager that gave MSU 20 runs on the afternoon.

Mississippi State will host Southern in midweek action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville. The contest will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
