Crump Highlights Day One, Earns First Team All-American Honor
March 11, 2022 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the opening day of the NCAA Indoor Championships, long jumper Cameron Crump became the Mississippi State track and field program's first athlete in the event since 1989 to earn an All-American status, and also became the first Bulldog to be awarded first team All-American honors for the men's long jump.
Shayla Broughton started the day off with a ninth-place finish in the women's pentathlon. Broughton became the third Bulldog to secure All-American status in the event, as well as the first MSU pentathlon student-athlete in nine years to be named a second team All-American.
Jesse Henderson and Rosealee Cooper each became second team All-Americans, as well. After a 7.80 run, Henderson is now the only Bulldog in program history to be named an All-American for the men's 60-meter hurdles. On the women's side, Cooper concluded her indoor season having extended her personal best in four consecutive meets (Razorback Invite, Tiger Paw Invite, SEC Indoor Championships, NCAA Indoor Championships). Her 8.06 time Friday night earned her second team All-American honors, thus becoming the first MSU student-athlete since 2015 to earn an All-American honor in the event.
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association did not start listing first and second teams until 2011.
Mississippi State wraps up its 2022 indoor season Saturday evening in the men's 4x400-meter relay. Representing the Maroon and White, Safir Scott, Gabriel Moronta, Leon Clarke and Lee Eppie enter the event only 0.59 seconds from breaking the decade-old school record. After a 3:05.65 run at the SEC Indoor Championships (Feb. 26), the squad enters Saturday with the 11th fastest time in the nation.
