Bulldogs Return to Magic City for NCAA Indoor Championships
March 10, 2022 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi State track and field program arrives to Birmingham with eight Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. This weekend marks the third time this indoor season that MSU will compete at the Birmingham Crossplex, after opening its 2022 campaign in January with back-to-back meets in the Magic City.
Â
Every MSU student-athlete competing in their respective event enters the meet with a top-15 national mark. The eight Bulldogs also sit in the top-two of MSU's all-time indoor performances for their respective events.
Â
Every member of the Southeastern Conference will also be present this weekend.
Â
Shayla Broughton | Pentathlon
Broughton is only 327 points away from breaking MSU's eight-year-old pentathlon record. Broughton enters the weekend ranked 4th nationally in the event, and will compete on Friday, March 11.
Rosealee Cooper | Women's 60m Hurdles
Cooper is only five seconds away from breaking the MSU women's seven-year-old record. Cooper's 8.07 run is currently the 15th best time in the nation. The semifinal round for the 60-meter hurdles will take place Friday evening, March 11, with the finals being held on Saturday, March 12.
Cameron Crump | Men's Long Jump
Crump enters Birmingham looking to break the Maroon and White's 31-year-old record, after tying it earlier this season at the Razorback Invite (Jan. 28). Crump will compete on Friday, March 11, and his personal-best, record-tying mark of 7.86 meters is tied for 11th nationally.
Jesse Henderson | Men's 60m Hurdles
Ranked 7th nationally, Henderson enters the weekend in possession of the program's record, which he set last season. The semifinal round for the 60-meter hurdles will take place Friday evening, March 11, with the finals being held on Saturday, March 12.
Safir Scott, Gabriel Moronta, Leon Clarke, Lee Eppie | 4x400m Relay
Scott, Moronta, Clarke and Eppie arrives to Birmingham only 0.59 seconds from breaking the decade-old school record. Their 3:05.65 run at the SEC Indoor Championships (Feb. 26) has them entering the weekend with the 11th fastest time in the nation. The squad will be competing Saturday evening, March 12.
Â
"[I'm expecting them] to take all the lessons and challenges they've had to learn and face this season and apply, this weekend, what we've been doing at training. I'm really excited to see what the response is going to be from our student-athletes when they get in that championship environment. I think the location will be phenomenal within the proximity of where Birmingham [Alabama] is compared to Starkville [Mississippi]. A lot of family members, members of our team who didn't make it, and friends of theirs are all going to be coming to support them. If they can take advantage of that energy and the familiarity of the venue, I know they have the ability to perform at an extremely high level this weekend."
