Bulldogs Hit The Road In SEC Play
March 10, 2022 | Men's Tennis
Mississippi State's men's tennis team might be considered road warriors by the time they return to Starkville for their next match on March 25.
The 32nd-ranked Bulldogs have four consecutive Southeastern Conference away matches spanning much of the Southeast over the next two weeks. MSU begins that road trip at No. 50 LSU on Friday at 5 p.m. before trekking to 28th-ranked Texas A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Next week, the Bulldogs are bound for South Carolina and Florida.
Mississippi State heads into this weekend's affair at 10-5 overall and coming off 5-2 losses to now top-ranked Tennessee and eighth-ranked Georgia at home to start SEC play. The Bulldogs closed out last weekend with a 6-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State.
Gregor Ramskogler is currently riding a team-best five-match singles winning streak. It marks the second-longest streak of the senior from Austria's career and includes a straight-set victory over then No. 76 Blake Croyder of Georgia last Friday.
No. 25 Florian Broska earned his 94th career singles victory last Sunday against the Delta Devils, which ties him with former teammate Giovanni Oradini (2017-21) for the seventh-most in MSU history.
Broska needs three more wins to reach Matthieu Ballay's mark for sixth set from 1996-99.
The Bulldogs' other ranked singles competitor, No. 81 Nemanja Malesevic, currently leads the team with an 11-3 record during dual match play. Malesevic also makes up half of the 65th-ranked doubles tandem along with Davide Tortora.
The duo of Malesevic and Tortora have won nine of their last 11 matches.
Mississippi State travels to LSU riding a five-match winning streak against the Tigers dating back to 2016. The Bulldogs claimed a 4-3 victory in Starkville last season.
LSU leads the all-time series 35-20-1, including a 16-8-1 advantage in Baton Rouge.
The Tigers (7-4) have also started conference play 0-2 after losses at then No. 25 Auburn (5-2) and No. 6 South Carolina (4-3) last weekend.
Sophomore Ronald Hohmann – ranked 50th – is the only ranked singles player in LSU's lineup. Broska beat Hohnman in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(3) last year in Starkville.
Texas A&M enters the weekend with a 9-6 record and a 1-0 mark in league play after defeating then No. 57 Arkansas 4-3 at home last Friday. The Aggies are coming off a 4-3 home loss to No. 15 Texas on Wednesday and will play a doubleheader against No. 41 Vanderbilt and Lamar on Friday prior to their match with the Bulldogs on Sunday.
Texas A&M tops the overall series against MSU 10-6, including a 6-1 edge in College Station. The Bulldogs won the last meeting on the Aggies' campus 6-1 in 2019 but fell to Texas A&M twice last season.
Sophomore Raphael Perot is ranked 98th in singles for Texas A&M. Perot played at the No. 6 position last year when the Aggies' eliminated Mississippi State in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championship.
Texas A&M also features the 46th-ranked doubles team of Austin Abbrat and Noah Schachter.
