March 11, 2022 | Men's Tennis
BATON ROUGE, La., – Mississippi State's 32nd-ranked men's tennis team secured its first Southeastern Conference win of the season with a 4-3 victory at No. 50 LSU on Friday.
The Bulldogs set the tone with back-to-back doubles wins to start the day. Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler defeated Ronald Hohmann and Vlad Lobak 6-3 and 65th-ranked Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora secured the point with their 7-5 victory against Gabriel Diaz Freire and Kent Hunter.
Malesevic carried that momentum over into single play as well. The 81st-ranked Malesevic won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 against Lobak to improve to a team-best 12-3 record during dual match play.
No. 25 Broska bounced back after dropping the first set 6-4 to the 50th-ranked Hohmann. Broska won the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to secure his 95th career singles victory, which moved him all alone into seventh in the MSU record book.
Alberto Colas clinched the match for the Bulldogs with his 6-0, 7-6(3) win over Benjamin Ambrosio.
"These young men showed a lot of grit today winning a tough doubles point and believing in their games," said head coach Matt Roberts. "We have been preaching committed action to them and how to play with a purpose and a growth mindset. It was a move in the right direction for most of them."
Mississippi State (11-5, 1-2 SEC) won its sixth-straight match over the Tigers dating back to 2016. LSU fell to 0-3 in league play and is 7-5 overall.
The Tigers did pick up three singles wins and a doubles victory on the day. Gregor Ramskogler saw his five-match singles winning streak end after losing a third set super tiebreaker to LSU's Boris Kozlov 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(4).
Hunter claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win against Carles Hernandez of the Bulldogs while Bautista Vilicich lost 6-3, 6-3 to Diaz Freire.
LSU's lone doubles victory came via Kozlov and Nick Watson over Colas and Hernandez 6-4.
Mississippi State continues its road trip westward traveling to No. 28 Texas A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m.
"We will continue to build and teach (our players) how to feed their positive dawgs and how that process is difficult but very rewarding when you are in control of that," Roberts said. "We are looking forward to another tough road match Sunday versus the Aggies."
