March 01, 2022 | Baseball
MSU will travel Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. on Wednesday to face Southern Miss
STARKVILLE – No. 9 Mississippi State (5-3) used a seventh-inning home run by Brad Cumbest, while pitchers Jack Walker and Parker Stinnett combined for 16 strikeouts as the Diamond Dawgs defeated Grambling (2-5) by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday (March 1) at Dudy Noble Field.
Grambling took a one-run lead in the second before State answered back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Lane Forsythe. The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the seventh when Cumbest launched his third home run in as many games that was the eventual game winner for the Dawgs.
Freshman right-hander Jack Walker pitched five innings and received a no-decision after striking out eight and allowed one run on just three hits in 5.0 innings. Parker Stinnett (1-0) came on in the sixth and pitched four scoreless innings while striking out eight to earn his first win of the season.
Grambling starter Jacorey Boudreaux (0-1) was charged with the loss after the lefty allowed two runs – both earned – on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Malik Abdul came on in the seventh and struck out two while not allowing a hit in the final two innings for the Tigers.
Offensively, both teams tallied five hits on the night, while the Dawgs received another multi-hit performance by freshman outfielder Aaron Downs, who was 2-for-3 with a double and run scored. Cumbest was 1-for-2 with his seventh-inning long ball, while he also drew a walk in the contest. Slate Alford was also 1-for-2 on the evening, while Logan Tanner went 1-for-4 at the plate.
