Diamond Dawg Gameday: Grambling & Southern Miss

First pitch betwen MSU and Grambling is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Dudy Noble Field
STARKVILLE – No. 9 Mississippi State (4-3) will close out an eight-game homestand this week as the Diamond Dawgs host Grambling in non-conference action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, at Dudy Noble Field.

MSU will then hit the road for the first time this season to face off against Southern Miss on Wednesday, March 2, at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. between the Diamond Dawgs and Golden Eagles.

The Tigers opened the 2022 season at the MLB Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans and ended the weekend with a 2-1 record. This past weekend, Grambling fell to 2-4 on the season after being swept in three games by Florida A&M. The Tigers opened the series on Friday (Feb. 25) with a 7-3 loss before dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday (L, 5-7; L, 2-6) to close out the weekend.

Grambling enters Tuesday's game hitting .270 as a team with 10 doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs on the season. The Tigers are led by John Garcia, who enters the weekend hitting .526 in six games. GSU's pitching staff has allowed 40 runs in 48.2 innings and enter Tuesday's game with a 5.55 team ERA.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a series victory over Jacksonville State at home and enter the contest with a 5-2 record overall on the young season. Like the Diamond Dawgs, Wednesday's game in Pearl will mark the first time in 2022 the Golden Eagles are playing away from their home ballpark. Southern Miss opened the campaign by sweeping North Alabama before losing to South Alabama (Feb. 22), 6-5, in 13 innings last week.

Southern Miss enters Wednesday night's game hitting .288 as a team with 12 doubles, three triples and four home runs on the season. Reece Ewing currently leads the Golden Eagles in batting average (.500) and home runs (2) entering the contest. As for Southern Miss' pitching staff, the Golden Eagles have allowed 20 runs in 67.0 innings and enter Wednesday's matchup with an impressive 1.88 team ERA.
