Dawgs Fall To Long Beach State in Opener
February 18, 2022 | Baseball
STARKVILLE – The 2022 college baseball season kicked off on Friday afternoon with No. 24 Long Beach State defeating No. 3 Mississippi State, 3-0, at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville. The 10,223 fans who made their way to The Dude on Friday were part of a new program record for attendance at a home opener.
MSU's Landon Sims lived up to the hype as a starter, striking out a career-high 13 and allowing just one run – a solo homer in the seventh – and no walks in 7.0 innings on the mound. Sims was charged with the loss despite a lights-out pitching performance by the righthander.
Parker Stinnett came on in relief in the eighth and allowed two runs on as many hits while striking out one and walking one. Stone Simmons closed out the game for the Dawgs by striking out the side in the top of the ninth.
Offensively, the Diamond Dawgs were held to one hit on the night, which came off the bat of true freshman designated hitter Hunter Hines, who was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double in the bottom of the seventh.
Long Beach State starter Luis Ramirez (1-0) earned the win after pitching six hitless innings and allowing just two walks while striking out five. State's lone base knock came off of Matt Fields, who entered the game in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings. Devereaux. Harrison picked up the save for the Dirtbags after coming on in the ninth and sitting the Dawgs down in the order.
The series continues with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday (Feb. 19) at The Dude. Mississippi State is scheduled to start RHP KC Hunt on Saturday, while Long Beach State will trot out RHP Marques Johnson.
The series will be broadcast on SEC Network+. All three contests will also be carried on the Mississippi State Sports Network powered by Learfield along with a live audio stream via HailState.com/plus. Click HERE for a full list of the 2022 MSU Baseball Radio Affiliates.
