Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Tigers Past Bulldogs

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State falls to No. 11 LSU on Thursday 71-59 in a back-and-forth affair. The Bulldogs now sit at 15-10, 6-7 in the SEC while LSU improved to 22-4, 10-3 in the SEC.
Anastasia Hayes finished as the Bulldogs' leading scorer for the sixth consecutive game, tallying 17 points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal. Hayes made a three-pointer and was a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line.
JerKaila Jordan scored in double digits for the 19th time this year, totaling 12 points and seven rebounds. Jordan also added four steals, two made 3-pointers and a block to her stat line. This marks her seventh outing of the season, recording three or more steals.
Myah Taylor had her third consecutive double-digit scoring performance, finishing with 11 points and a season-high, three made 3-point shots. Taylor also added three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Charlotte Kohl had her best game in a Bulldog uniform, scoring a career-high eight points and pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds in her 33 minutes. Caterrion Thompson also chipped in with nine points and three rebounds, while Aislynn Hayes pulled down four rebounds herself.
Despite trailing for over 25 minutes of the game, Mississippi State was resilient and fought back each time LSU tried to take control of the contest. State, unfortunately, could not find the bottom of the basket in the fourth quarter, scoring just three points over the final six minutes. This would lead to LSU closing the game on a 17-3 run where they scored 15 unanswered points.
Quoting Coach Novak
On how much of a factor has fatigue been during the past few games
"I think it is a definite factor, but I saw LSU do this to Kentucky as well. I saw Kentucky play LSU right up until the end. LSU has some really good players. Before we complain about what happened to us, we have to make sure that we are giving credit to a really good and well-coached team. I thought Kim [Mulkey] had a very good mix of attacking matchups and letting them play. They hit some very important shots down the stretch, and we didn't. I thought that we competed well, and they got us down the stretch."
