TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Mississippi State volleyball team defeated Alabama in straight sets on Saturday afternoon in Foster Auditorium.
MSU took an early lead in the first set, taking the frame 26-24, then followed with a 25-21 victory. The Bulldogs closed out the match with a statement 25-11 victory to win the final set.
"What a great win by the Dawgs," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "Super proud of our effort and execution. We were disciplined, we worked hard, and got that road win. That first set showed a lot of fight and showed that we weren't willing to back down. I thought it was really impressive how we kept our composure and Lauren [Myrick] was able to finish it out on the service line for us."
MSU was led on the offensive attack by Gabby Waden, who posted a 12-kill performance on the afternoon. Waden also added four digs and three aces. Sania Petties followed suit with seven kills, three digs and two blocks.
Freshman Sophie Agee added five kills, four digs and three blocks. Deja Robinson and Lauren Myrick each garnered four kills apiece on the afternoon. Robinson added three blocks and two digs, while Myrick issued eight digs, one block and an ace.
Gabby Coulter earned her team-leading fourteenth double-double by issuing 26 assists and 11 digs, while adding three kills and an ace.
"Offensively, [Gabby] Coulter kept us balanced and everyone was efficient," Dennis said. "Lilly [Gunter] anchored us again defensively and had a great service run too."
State's backcourt defense was led by Lilly Gunter with 15 digs, four assists and two aces. Lacey Jeffcoat followed suit with five digs, one ace and one assists.
As a team, MSU complied 52 digs, 35 kills, 33 assists. The Bulldogs held the Crimson Tide to a .107 hitting clip.
"Really proud of our team today and for sticking with a game plan and seeing it through," said Dennis. "Hail State!"
