Volleyball Drops Five-Setter To Arkansas

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State volleyball team dropped a five-set battle to the No. 23 Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday afternoon at the Newell-Grissom Building.
The Bulldogs (9-5, 2-2 SEC) stormed out to take the first set 25-15. Arkansas (11-3, 2-2 SEC) responded with a 25-19 victory in the second and a 25-18 win in the third. The Bulldogs forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-23 victory, but the Razorbacks closed out the match with a 15-8 win.
"We just have to focus on the serve and pass in the first contact for us to be good and dialed in across the board," head coach Julie Darty said. "I didn't think we were as efficient today. Arkansas definitely flipped a switch, they made a lot of great adjustments on us. This league is super tough and it's super hard to beat anybody in this league. If you're not going to bring it, you're going to struggle."
Gabby Coulter and Emily Oerther combined for 46 assists and 18 digs. Coulter recorded her team-leading ninth double-double with 37 assists and 16 digs, while adding one kill and one block.
Shania Cromartie tallied her fourth double-double with a team-leading 19 kills and 16 digs. Cromartie has recorded double-digits kills in eight of her last 13 outings and double-digit digs in six of her 13 appearances.
Gabby Waden and Lauren Myrick each issued 11 kills apiece on the afternoon. Waden added six digs and three blocks, while Myrick tacked on 11 digs and two aces.
Sania Petties and Deja Robinson both added six kills. Petties recorded five digs and two blocks in addition to her six kills, while Robinson added three blocks.
Lilly Gunter recorded 14 digs to go along with five assists. Gunter has secured 10-plus digs in 13 of her 14 appearances while wearing the libero jersey.
The Bulldogs head to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M for a pair of matches. First serve on Friday, Oct. 7 is set for 6 p.m. CT, while Saturday, Oct. 8 is at 4 p.m.
